The USDA has announced a new federal order to enhance milk testing and surveillance for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus in dairy herds.
This initiative, effective December 6, aims to protect the nation’s milk supply and ensure disease prevention through rigorous testing.
Under the federal order, raw (unpasteurized) milk samples will be collected nationwide for H5N1 testing. Developed with input from state, veterinary, and public health stakeholders, the program aims to facilitate comprehensive monitoring and protect dairy herds from the virus.
This strategy supplements the USDA’s April 2024 order, which mandated testing before the interstate movement of lactating dairy cattle and required reporting of positive test results in livestock.
The initial program rollout will include six states: California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Ohio is expected to join the initiative at a later date, with the Ohio Department of Agriculture working closely with USDA and the dairy industry to prepare for compliance.
This enhanced testing strategy represents a significant step forward in protecting dairy herds and the national milk supply from H5N1.
By collaborating with key stakeholders, the USDA aims to ensure early detection and effective response to potential outbreaks, safeguarding both livestock and public health.
As the program progresses, dairy farmers and industry professionals can expect ongoing updates and resources to support compliance and maintain the health of dairy herds nationwide.
