Cattle Producers Urged to Invest Smartly

Cattle Producers Urged to Invest Smartly

By Andi Anderson

Cattle markets across the U.S. continue to break records in 2025. At one local sale, the top 10 loads of fed cattle all averaged over $2.40 per pound. One standout load of five steers and heifers averaged $247.59 per pound, totaling more than $3,800 per head. Feeder cattle, cull cows, and bulls are also seeing historically high prices.

According to CattleFax, it cost $795 to keep a cow in the Corn Belt in 2024, while average calf revenue reached $1,615 per head—making recent years very profitable for the cow-calf sector. But with strong profits, producers are now asking: where should they reinvest?

Facilities are a top area for improvement. A simple catch pen and head gate allow producers to castrate and vaccinate calves more effectively, boosting animal value and health. Improving ventilation in older feeding barns is also a cost-effective way to raise herd well-being.

Succession planning is another smart investment, especially for multi-generation farms. It may not be glamorous, but preparing for future transitions helps ensure the next generation can continue raising cattle.

Marketing is equally vital. Having a clear plan, using risk protection tools, maintaining calf uniformity, and following health protocols are key to building a trusted brand. A reputation herd often markets itself.

Genetics remain a high-return area. Investing in a quality herd sire has a lasting impact on productivity and profitability. According to cattle expert John Grimes, “We need six breeds of cattle to produce high quality beef in the varying environments in the US.”

Finally, John’s advice still rings true: “The rules of engagement in the beef industry change rapidly… The continuation of your current business model should be re-evaluated.”

The current market offers great potential. Strategic investments now can help secure the future of the beef industry.
