Feral Swine - A Growing Concern in Ohio

Feral Swine - A Growing Concern in Ohio

By Andi Anderson

Ohio's landscape is facing a potential threat from feral swine, raising concerns among federal and state authorities, despite reassurances that large-scale wild hog invasion is unlikely in Erie County. Yet, these creatures have gained a foothold in southern Ohio, prompting apprehension among farmers.

Traditionally found in Southern states, the migration of wild pigs north and westward has been evident. While a 1982 USDA map showed their absence in Ohio and Michigan, the 2022 map illustrates their presence in both states.

Wild pigs pose significant agricultural risks, being voracious consumers of crops, damaging fields, pastures, and orchards. Their presence also heightens disease transmission concerns to livestock and humans.

The Ohio Farm Bureau, in its annual meeting, adopted resolutions supporting bans on feral swine importation, release, maintenance, and recreational hunting, aiming to prevent their establishment in Ohio.

Efforts to mitigate this threat are underway, with USDA officials striving to eradicate feral swine, primarily localized in southern Ohio. However, the definition of feral hogs extends beyond breeding populations, including escaped domestic pigs or potbellied pigs.

State wildlife agencies emphasize control measures, allowing hunters to shoot feral swine throughout the year, albeit with limited regulations. Officials encourage reporting sightings to facilitate swift elimination.

While optimistic about containment, experts continue to advocate for cooperation in eradicating these invasive species, emphasizing the importance of reporting sightings for swift action to prevent their proliferation.
