Ohio Workshops Guide Families in Farm Planning

Ohio Workshops Guide Families in Farm Planning

By Andi Anderson

Ohio State University Extension is offering a series of winter workshops to help farm families plan for the future of their farm businesses.

These programs are designed for families who are thinking about how to pass farm ownership, management, and assets to the next generation in a clear and organized way.

The workshops focus on encouraging farm families to actively discuss and plan for farm transition decisions. Participants will learn how to communicate effectively, set shared goals, and understand legal and financial tools that support smooth transitions.

Parents, children, and even grandchildren are encouraged to attend together so families can build a strong plan for the future of both the farm and the family.

The program is taught by experienced Ohio State University Extension specialists with expertise in farm management and agricultural law.

Topics covered include setting goals for transition and estate planning, planning for unexpected events, managing family communication and conflict, and understanding federal estate tax challenges.

Participants will also learn about wills, trusts, limited liability companies, probate avoidance, and strategies for treating on-farm and off-farm heirs fairly. Protecting farmland and building a professional support team are also important parts of the program.

Families may choose to attend the workshop through a convenient online webinar series or participate in in-person sessions hosted at several locations across Ohio.

The webinar option allows families to join from home through four evening sessions held in March. Electronic course materials are provided to all participants, and registration is required by the stated deadline.

In-person workshops are offered at multiple regional locations during the winter months. These sessions are held over two evenings at each site and are led by local Extension educators. Registration is required for each location, and fees may vary depending on the site.

These workshops provide farm families with practical tools and guidance to support long-term farm success. By planning early and working together, families can reduce uncertainty, avoid conflict, and create a clear path for the next generation. Overall, the program helps Ohio farm families protect their legacy and prepare confidently for the future.
