Ohio State University Extension has launched a new video series titled “Green Fields Green Dollars,” hosted by Extension staff members Rachel Cochran and Clint Schroeder.
This series aims to shed light on conservation agriculture practices from an economic perspective, highlighting the financial benefits alongside environmental advantages.
Rachel Cochran, a Water Quality Extension Associate serving Paulding, Defiance, and Van Wert counties in Northwest Ohio, brings her expertise in promoting better soil health, nutrient management, and water quality to the series.
She works closely with local producers through research, educational events, and one-on-one consultations, sharing insights on practices that enhance farm sustainability.
Clint Schroeder, Program Manager of the Farm Business Analysis and Benchmarking Statewide Program, provides an economic lens to the series. He utilizes specialized software called FINPACK to help farm operators assess the profitability and economic health of their business and individual enterprises.
Data gathered from these assessments contribute to a national database that highlights the economic differences related to various agricultural practices.
Together, Cochran and Schroeder host the series to discuss the benefits of conservation agriculture, not just for the environment but also for the financial well-being of farms. The first episode, titled “Cover Crop Direct Costs,” explores the costs and benefits of implementing cover crops, using real-life data from farms across the Midwest.
It provides a detailed look at the direct costs involved in cover cropping and how this practice can influence overall farm economics.
The second episode of the series will delve deeper into cover crops, examining their impact on yield, ecosystem services, and other financial aspects that affect farm profitability. The series provides a balanced view of how sustainable practices can also be economically viable for farmers.
“Green Fields Green Dollars” is a valuable resource for farmers looking to adopt conservation practices with an eye on their bottom line. The first episode is available on the OSU Agronomy Team YouTube channel or can be accessed at go.osu.edu/GFGD.
This series serves as a guide for understanding the financial implications of conservation agriculture, helping farmers make informed decisions that benefit both their land and their livelihood.
