Ohio Farm Bureau Urges Swift Action on Farm Bill 20

Ohio Farm Bureau Urges Swift Action on Farm Bill 20

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Farm Bureau is calling for timely action on federal farm policy as it urges Congress to pass the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026. The organization recently sent a letter supporting House Bill 7567, also known as the 2026 Farm Bill, which was introduced by Chairman G.T. Thompson and the U.S. House Agriculture Committee.

The letter emphasized the need to address issues such as California’s Proposition 12 and to increase investment in farm programs related to credit, research, and conservation efforts.

Ohio Farm Bureau President Bill Patterson described the difficult circumstances many farmers are experiencing.

He stated, “Ohio agriculture is facing a generational storm of challenges with skyrocketing input costs, nearly record-low crop prices, harsh weather conditions and continued trade disputes. These pressures have left many farm families operating on razor-thin margins or making the difficult decision to shutter the family farm altogether. Ohio farmers need a farm policy that reflects today’s economic realities and allows them to plan, invest and continue to grow for generations to come.”

The letter to Congress was supported jointly by several state Farm Bureaus and the American Farm Bureau, reflecting a broad push for swift action on the bill. These organizations argue that updating the Farm Bill is essential to strengthening long‑term economic stability for farmers, improving resilience, and ensuring the food system remains secure.

In addition to the letter, the American Farm Bureau has issued an Action Alert encouraging members to contact lawmakers. The alert urges farmers to reach out to House Agriculture Committee members and request support during the full committee markup. Two Ohio representatives, Dave Taylor (OH‑2) and Shontel Brown (OH‑11), currently serve on the committee and are among those being called upon to advance the bill.

Ohio Farm Bureau leaders believe the passage of the 2026 Farm Bill is critical for addressing the modern pressures facing agriculture. They maintain that strong farm policy will help farmers manage risks, strengthen operations, and continue contributing to local and national food systems for years to come.
