Organic Education Thrives at Olney Friends School

Organic Education Thrives at Olney Friends School

By Andi Anderson

Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio, has earned a 10-year USDA organic certification for its 350-acre working farm. This achievement highlights the school’s long-standing commitment to organic agriculture and hands-on learning. The school, founded in 1837, integrates farming into daily education for students in grades 9–12.

The organic certification recognizes farms that follow strict federal standards. These standards limit the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and require practices that protect soil, water, and livestock welfare. Olney’s farm meets these requirements through careful crop production and responsible livestock management. Students learn about these practices every day through direct participation in planting, harvesting, and caring for animals.

“Students participate directly in planting, harvesting, and caring for livestock,” said Farm Manager Don Guindon. “They’re not just learning about agriculture — they’re developing skills you can’t get from a textbook.”

Olney Friends School maintains a 3:1 student-teacher ratio and offers a rigorous academic program. The farm adds an experiential learning component that supports students who learn best through hands-on activities. This approach helps them understand how food is grown, how ecosystems function, and why sustainable farming matters.

Located near the Pennsylvania and West Virginia borders, the school provides an alternative learning environment grounded in Quaker values such as community, equality, peace, and integrity. Many students choose Olney for its supportive and inclusive environment. The school welcomes learners from across the United States and around the world.

Head of School Christian Acemah notes that families often feel connected to the school as soon as they visit. According to him, students find a sense of belonging and a place where they can be themselves. Olney also appeals to students seeking smaller classes, international boarding opportunities, inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and hands-on, experience-based education.

Through its certified organic farm and strong learning community, Olney Friends School continues to offer a unique and meaningful educational experience for high-school students.
