USDA Strengthens Food System Protection Plan

USDA Strengthens Food System Protection Plan

By Jamie Martin

A new federal plan from the USDA is taking steps to treat agriculture as a key part of national security. The initiative includes seven major areas of focus designed to protect farmland, secure the food supply, and guard against foreign threats.

One of the most important elements of the plan is the proposed restriction of American farmland ownership by foreign adversaries.

The goal is to prevent external control over land critical to food production. The initiative also aims to enhance supply chain strength and protect plant and animal health from diseases and disruptions.

A major highlight of this plan is the appointment of the Secretary of Agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). This committee reviews business deals involving foreign investors and will now consider agriculture and food systems when making decisions.

While foreign ownership of U.S. farmland stands at only about 3%, the USDA emphasizes the need for proactive measures. The strategy acknowledges the importance of balancing national interests with farmers’ rights.

The agency assures that farmers will still retain the freedom to invest in, develop, and sell their land. The plan does not restrict these rights but instead aims to ensure that national food security is not compromised.

“Food security is indeed national security, and we want to ensure that any steps by USDA or by the Trump administration protect American agriculture while also preserving the freedom and abilities of farmers to develop, to invest and to sell their land, depending on their unique circumstances.”

This plan represents a significant shift in federal focus, recognizing that secure food systems are vital to the safety and stability of the country.
