Drought Deepens in Northwest Ohio While South Recovers

By Andi Anderson

Ohio farmers are facing a mixed weather outlook this fall, with drought conditions worsening in northwest Ohio even as southern and eastern regions benefit from recent rainfall. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor Report, about 9% of the state is now experiencing D3-extreme drought, with reports of choking dust, field fires, and historically low river levels, including the Maumee River near Waterville.

The latest data shows that while parts of southern Ohio received 3 to 5 inches of rain, much of the northwest received less than half an inch, continuing a pattern of uneven rainfall across the state. The Ohio State University’s C.O.R.N. Newsletter reported that the lack of moisture has reduced crop quality and increased harvest challenges.

Weather patterns have fluctuated, with temperatures dropping 5–12°F below normal in early October before returning to milder conditions this week. Highs are expected to stay in the upper 60s to mid-70s, with a chance of light frost later in the week. The National Weather Service forecasts 1–2 inches of rain statewide over the upcoming weekend, though northwest counties are again expected to see lighter amounts.

Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center’s 8–14 day outlook suggests warmer-than-normal temperatures and near-normal rainfall through late October. Seasonal averages include highs of 63–67°F, lows of 41–46°F, and weekly rainfall between 0.55–0.75 inches.

Farmers and residents are encouraged to submit field observations to the National Drought Mitigation Center’s Condition Monitoring Reports to support data collection and drought tracking.
