Examining Foreign Investment in Ohio Farmland

Examining Foreign Investment in Ohio Farmland

By Andi Anderson

Ohio has witnessed a notable surge in foreign investment in farmland, reflecting a broader national trend of increasing foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land. With 529,269 acres held by foreign investors in 2022, comprising 2.7% of privately held farmland in the state, Ohio's agricultural landscape is undergoing significant shifts.

The Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA) mandates the disclosure of U.S. farmland transactions by foreign investors, aiming to provide transparency and oversight. Ohio has further bolstered these regulations with its legislation, the "Save our Farmland and Protect our National Security Act," which maintains a registry of individuals and organizations prohibited from acquiring farmland within the state.

Canadian and German investors lead foreign investments in Ohio farmland, collectively holding a substantial proportion of the foreign-owned acreage. Concerns regarding the impact of foreign investment on land prices and the stewardship of agricultural resources have prompted legislative action to safeguard Ohio's farming sector.

The "Save our Farmland and Protect our National Security Act" focuses on monitoring farmland ownership to ensure that foreign investments support the growth and modernization of Ohio's agricultural industry while safeguarding the state's farmland and food supply. Balancing economic development with the preservation of farmlands is paramount in navigating the complexities of foreign investment in agriculture.

As Ohio continues to grapple with the implications of increased foreign ownership of farmland, it is essential to prioritize policies that promote sustainable farming practices, local economic vitality, and food security. By addressing these challenges proactively, Ohio can harness the benefits of foreign investment while mitigating potential risks to its agricultural sector and rural communities.
