Meristem Crop Performance has unveiled a new, no-cost Carbon Intensity (CI) Calculator designed to help American farmers anonymously measure the carbon emissions of their farm operations.
This online tool, called the “CI Estimator,” allows growers to assess the impact of their farming practices on their CI score, a key measure of carbon emissions where lower scores are better.
Meristem’s Founder and CEO, Mitch Eviston, highlighted the benefits of the CI Estimator, saying, “We want to help farmers understand how our products can reduce costs, increase yields, and boost income through regenerative practices. Our platform aligns perfectly with programs like EQIP, Section 45Z, and carbon offsets, helping farmers gain financially while supporting sustainability.”
The CI Estimator provides an overview of practices affecting a farm’s CI score, including yield improvement, reduction of synthetic inputs, minimal tillage, and the use of cover crops. The tool is free to use, whereas similar tools may cost farmers $5 to $10 per acre.
Peter Rousonelos, Meristem’s Senior VP of Business Development, explained that their products, such as EXCAVATOR AMS, can significantly enhance plant nutrition and reduce fertilizer costs. “Investing in our biologicals is really a fertilizer spend that can improve a farm’s efficiency and lower its CI score, leading to additional income,” he said.
The importance of documenting farming practices to understand and improve CI scores was emphasized by Andy Jenks, an Illinois farmer and founder of Verdova, the company that partnered with Meristem to develop the calculator. Jenks advised farmers to carefully track every aspect of their operations to accurately determine their CI score.
Meristem’s initiative is part of a broader effort to make farming more sustainable and profitable. By offering the CI Estimator for free, Meristem aims to empower farmers to enhance their operations, ensuring long-term sustainability and profitability in agriculture.
The introduction of this tool underscores Meristem’s commitment to supporting American farmers in their journey toward more efficient, environmentally friendly farming practices.
