Since its inception in 2019, Ohio's H2Ohio initiative has been instrumental in addressing water quality challenges and promoting sustainable farming practices. Initially focusing on the Lake Erie watershed, H2Ohio has now expanded statewide, marking a significant milestone in water quality management and agricultural sustainability.
Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Director Brian Baldridge recently announced the extension of H2Ohio's agricultural incentive program to producers across Ohio. This expansion aims to engage farmers statewide in implementing science-based best management practices to prevent nutrient runoff and improve water quality.
The program incentivizes farmers to adopt proven conservation practices through financial and technical assistance, fostering a collaborative approach to environmental stewardship. By enrolling in the program, farmers receive support to develop and implement Voluntary Nutrient Management Plans, optimizing nutrient utilization and reducing environmental impact.
The expansion of H2Ohio reflects a commitment to collective action in safeguarding water resources and promoting sustainable agriculture. With enrollment open to row-crop producers across 64 counties, the program seeks to enroll 500,000 acres, offering a first-come, first-served opportunity for participation.
In addition to incentivizing nutrient management plans, H2Ohio supports initiatives such as conservation ditches and extensive research projects to enhance water quality. The ongoing collaboration with Ohio State University on the Shallow Run Watershed project exemplifies the program's dedication to advancing scientific research and innovation in agricultural practices.
The Shallow Run Watershed project, funded by $4 million in H2Ohio funds, aims to implement conservation practices on 70% of the crop ground, comparing water quality results before and after practice implementation. By offering higher payments and innovative incentives, such as the "agglomeration bonus" for adopting subsurface phosphorus fertilizer application, the project encourages widespread adoption of conservation practices among farmers.
As H2Ohio continues to evolve statewide, ongoing efforts focus on effective contract management, software integration, and quality control to streamline program administration. The initiative remains committed to fostering partnerships with farmers, soil and water conservation districts, and academic institutions to achieve meaningful improvements in water quality and agricultural sustainability.
