House Advances Grain Inspection Bill with NGFA Supported Updates

House Advances Grain Inspection Bill with NGFA Supported Updates

By Jamie Martin

The House Agriculture Committee has approved a bill to reauthorize the U.S. Grain Standards Act (USGSA), helping to ensure that grain inspection and weighing services continue beyond their scheduled expiration on September 30.

This legislation is essential for keeping America’s grain exports trusted and consistent. The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA), which represents grain handlers and exporters, welcomed the bill’s passage and highlighted that many of its priorities were included.

The bill introduces several NGFA-supported updates that aim to make the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) more efficient and transparent. A major focus is on encouraging the adoption of new technologies to improve the speed and accuracy of grain grading and inspections.

Another important part of the bill adjusts how the user fee cap is applied. This change gives FGIS more flexibility in how it uses collected funds, which could improve services without increasing fees for grain businesses.

Earlier this year, NGFA leaders testified before the committee, outlining why USGSA reauthorization matters and recommending updates to improve the system. Their input helped shape the current version of the bill.

Grain inspections play a crucial role in maintaining quality and fairness in domestic and international grain trade. The federal inspection system gives buyers confidence in U.S. grain and supports strong market relationships around the world.

With the committee’s approval, the bill now moves forward through the legislative process.
