The Local Food for All campaign is working to improve healthy food access in Appalachian Ohio by delivering fresh, local food to low-income families. From July 7 to October 20, 2025, the program will serve 20 families with weekly shares of Ohio-grown fruits, vegetables, and grain-based products. These will be distributed through Community Food Initiatives’ Veggie Van, reaching Glouster and Coolville communities.
This year, the campaign has expanded to include fresh bread from Village Bakery as part of the Neighbor Loaves (& Meals) project. This addition strengthens the program by offering baked goods made with at least 25% locally grown grains, beans, or nuts.
Appalachian Ohio is home to many farmers, yet many residents still lack access to nutritious foods, especially as several federal nutrition programs are ending. Projects like Local Food for All help fill this gap while supporting regional farmers and food producers.
Neighbor Loaves started in 2020 when local residents raised $25,000 to support the program. Since then, it has distributed nearly $70,000 worth of food. Between June 2023 and June 2024, it received $20,000 in USDA support and $15,000 from Ohio CAN for emergency food delivery in Logan County. An $8,000 grant from the Rocky Community Improvement Fund further helped Athens County food pantries.
Food insecurity is a major issue in the region, with Athens County reporting an 18.3% rate. That means over 11,000 people lack enough food for a healthy life. Community members have shared that the program allowed them to eat more vegetables and appreciate items like fresh local bread.
Donations are essential to keep this work going. Rural Action is aiming to raise $10,000 to continue helping families in need and promoting healthy local food.
