An Ohio egg farm housing 560,000 birds has recently confirmed an avian influenza outbreak on December 14. This marks the fifth case in Ohio since mid-November, contributing to the loss of 4.5 million birds in the state over the past month, making it the most impacted in the country during this period.
Located in Darke County, known as Ohio's second-largest poultry producer, this recent outbreak raises concerns about the region's poultry industry. The prevalence of detections extends beyond Ohio, with approximately a hundred flocks in nearly half the states reporting cases. In a related incident, a farm in Dutchess County, New York, housing 4,200 birds, also tested positive on December 12.
The impact of avian influenza on poultry farming is significant, prompting an urgent need for vigilance and preventive actions within the industry. Anyone seeking background information on avian influenza or needing to report a potential outbreak can find relevant resources here.
