Ohio Field Day Highlights Manure Safety and Precision Farming

By Andi Anderson

Farmers and agricultural professionals will have an opportunity to learn about manure safety and precision nutrient management at a special field day in Ohio on Aug. 4, 2026. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Sterling Heights Dairy in Creston, Ohio.

The educational program is designed to help farmers improve manure handling practices, protect natural resources, and make better use of valuable nutrients. Attendees will gain practical knowledge from industry and extension experts through presentations and demonstrations.

One of the key topics will focus on managing manure spills. Glen Arnold, OSU Extension Manure Management Specialist, will explain important steps farmers can take to prevent and respond to manure spills. Proper spill management can help reduce environmental risks and protect nearby water sources.

Participants will also learn about the benefits of manure use on crop production and soil health. Amber Emmons, OSU Extension Water Quality Associate, will discuss how manure impacts soil health, nitrogen rates, water quality, and overall farm profitability. Understanding nutrient management can help farmers maximize crop performance while minimizing environmental concerns.

Technology will play an important role in the event as well. Lyndsey Lawlis of AgPro will present information about the John Deere Harvest Lab 3000. This technology helps farmers collect and analyze nutrient data, allowing for more accurate manure application decisions.

In addition, Greg Heiby of Ag Info Tech will discuss precision nutrient application plans. These plans use data-driven approaches to help farmers apply nutrients more efficiently and effectively. Precision application methods can improve nutrient utilization, reduce waste, and support sustainable farming practices.

The field day is free to attend, making it accessible to farmers, landowners, and agricultural stakeholders interested in improving nutrient management practices. Lunch will be provided for attendees.

The program is sponsored by OSU Extension–Wayne County, the Wayne Soil and Water Conservation District, and The Wayne-Ashland Dairy Services Unit. Organizers encourage participants to make a courtesy reservation by July 31.

By bringing together experts, technology providers, and farmers, the event aims to promote safe manure management, improve nutrient efficiency, and support long-term agricultural productivity while protecting soil and water resources.
