Ohio funds $332K for ag learning

By Andi Anderson

This week, Ohio officials announced the allocation of $332,960 in Grow Ohio Grants aimed at supporting local programs that provide agriculture education opportunities for children.

These grants are part of the state's efforts to enrich the lives of young Ohioans by connecting them with the origins of their food and the rewarding process of growing, harvesting, and preparing fresh produce.

Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of these programs in a press release, noting that they offer children valuable first-hand experiences in agriculture.

"My wife, Fran, is passionate about teaching young people where their food comes from and how it gets to their plate, and these programs do just that," DeWine said. "In many cases, food from these programs is even brought onto the school lunch menu for all students to enjoy."

The Grow Ohio Grants will enable recipients to engage in various farm-to-school projects, including outdoor or indoor school gardening, hydroponics, and collaborations with local food producers.

Some of the awarded programs plan to incorporate the food they produce into school meals, offering students a direct connection between the farm and their lunch trays.

Governor DeWine also highlighted the long-term benefits of these programs, stating that they may inspire some students to pursue careers in agriculture.

"For some students, these programs will inspire them to take an interest in the agriculture industry and become part of the next generation of Ohioans who will feed our communities," he added. "But all who take part will certainly become more connected to our state’s rich agricultural heritage, while learning valuable life skills they can carry with them forever."

The Grow Ohio Grant funding is provided through the 2022 USDA State Agency Farm to School State Formula Grant.

The first round of awardees was selected based on criteria such as focusing on workforce development, partnering with local farmers or food producers, and serving communities with high percentages of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals.

Awardees included a range of school districts and child care centers, each contributing to the growth of agriculture education in Ohio. These programs not only educate students about where their food comes from but also play a role in fostering a new generation of individuals passionate about agriculture and food production.

The Grow Ohio Grants represent a significant step forward in enhancing agricultural education and ensuring that Ohio's agricultural heritage is passed on to future generations.
