Ohio house passes bills on career tech and feral swine control

By Andi Anderson

Ohio's legislative agenda achieved significant milestones with the successful passage of two bills by the Ohio House, prioritizing education and agriculture protection.

House Bill 432, sponsored by Rep. Don Jones, aims to streamline the process for industry professionals to obtain career tech licenses, particularly in fields like agriculture.

This initiative is designed to address the shortage of qualified career tech educators by offering alternative pathways to licensure, supported by educational associations such as the Ohio Association of Agricultural Educators.

Concurrently, House Bill 503 addresses the threat of feral swine by prohibiting their importation and hunting in Ohio. The legislation also targets the practice of garbage feeding, known to sustain feral swine populations and pose risks to agriculture and the environment.

Whittney Bowers, Director of State Policy and Grassroots Engagement at the Ohio Farm Bureau, emphasized the collaborative efforts with legislators and stakeholders to advance these bills.

The measures aim to protect Ohio's rural landscapes and agricultural productivity from the detrimental effects of invasive species like feral swine.

Both bills have garnered bipartisan support and now await review in the Senate. The Ohio Farm Bureau remains committed to advocating for policies that strengthen education opportunities and safeguard agricultural interests across the state.
