Ohio hunters can donate venison to local food banks

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has partnered with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help food banks across the state receive donated venison. This initiative connects hunters with charitable organizations, turning harvested deer into meals for families in need.

Supporting Food Assistance Programs

The Division of Wildlife has provided a $30,000 grant to fund this effort, ensuring that donated white-tailed deer meat is processed and distributed to verified food assistance organizations. Each donated deer yields about 50 pounds of venison, equivalent to roughly 200 meals.

How Hunters Can Contribute

Ohio hunters interested in supporting the cause can bring their harvested deer to one of 34 certified deer-processing centers statewide. These centers ensure the meat is properly prepared and delivered to food banks and similar organizations.

Making an Impact

This program highlights the role of hunters in combating food insecurity while promoting responsible wildlife management. By donating venison, hunters can make a significant impact on their communities, helping to provide nutritious meals to those in need.

With the support of ODNR and Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, Ohio hunters have a unique opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause while showcasing the benefits of sustainable hunting practices.
