Ohio Reports Highest Bird Flu Cases in Commercial Poultry Operations

By Andi Anderson

Ohio has reported the highest number of bird flu cases among commercial poultry operations in the U.S. this year. More than 4.1 million chickens and turkeys have been impacted, with outbreaks concentrated in Darke and Mercer counties, affecting large-scale poultry farms.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have confirmed that infected flocks are being depopulated to prevent further spread of avian influenza.

Experts suggest that wild birds play a key role in transmission, increasing risks for commercial poultry farms.

Although bird flu poses minimal risk to humans, health officials advise cooking poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165°F as a precaution. Farmers are urged to follow biosecurity measures to minimize disease spread, including limiting farm visitors, sanitizing equipment, and monitoring flock health.

As the second-largest egg producer in the country, Ohio’s poultry industry is taking strong regulatory steps to contain the outbreak. The USDA provides compensation to affected producers based on flock size and financial loss.

Officials continue to monitor the situation while working with farmers to enhance disease control efforts. With the increasing spread of bird flu, poultry farms are advised to stay vigilant and enforce strict safety measures to protect their flocks and maintain production stability.
