At just seven years old, Te’Lario Watkins launched a successful mushroom business called Tiger Mushroom Farms. Now a 16-year-old high school student in Columbus, Ohio, Watkins continues to operate his thriving business while also focusing on a new passion: teaching youth about gardening and sustainability through his nonprofit, the Garden Club Project.
The Garden Club Project, founded by Watkins in March 2020, aims to inspire young people in his community to grow their own food and build a more sustainable food system.
Watkins believes that gardening not only provides fresh produce but also strengthens community bonds and contributes to overall health and well-being. Since its inception, the Garden Club Project has distributed over 2,000 pounds of fresh produce, provided 300 seed kits to children, and shared 150 mushroom kits with elementary students.
Watkins collaborates with seven local and urban farmers to enhance efficiency and resource-sharing. These farmers, who also promote healthy eating habits among children, donate their produce to local food banks.
The group meets monthly to exchange equipment and ideas, making the process more cost-effective and community-centered.
Watkins emphasizes the importance of involving the next generation in agriculture, stating that it not only breathes new life into the field but also offers opportunities for enjoyment and environmental stewardship.
His dedication to the cause has earned him multiple awards, including the Hormel Food Hero Award, Barron Prize, Points Of Light Award, and Generation Green Award. He also received an honorable mention from the International Young Eco-Hero Awards.
In addition to his nonprofit work, Watkins recently participated in an event in California with 50 other young entrepreneurs, organized by Taco Bell.
Looking ahead, Watkins plans to attend Ohio State University to study agricultural engineering. He hopes to expand the Garden Club Project further, reaching more communities and inspiring even more young people to embrace gardening and sustainability.
Watkins’ journey from a young mushroom entrepreneur to a leader in youth gardening demonstrates the power of passion and determination.
He is committed to making a positive impact on both his community and the environment, and he looks forward to continuing his work as he advances in his education and career.
