Six Ohio counties declared natural disaster area due to drought

By Andi Anderson

Six counties in Ohio—Adams, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Coshocton, and Hamilton—have been declared a primary natural disaster area by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to prolonged drought conditions.

This designation allows farm operators in these counties and nearby areas to access emergency loans through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA).

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, these areas experienced severe drought conditions, classified as D2 Drought-Severe or worse, for at least eight consecutive weeks during the growing season.

The drought has had a significant impact on farming operations, making it difficult for farmers to maintain productivity.

Farmers in the designated primary counties, as well as contiguous counties including Clinton, Guernsey, Highland, Holmes, Knox, Licking, Montgomery, Muskingum, Pike, Preble, Scioto, Tuscarawas, and Warren, are eligible for FSA emergency loans.

These loans can be used to meet various recovery needs, including the replacement of essential equipment, livestock, or the reorganization of farming operations. The loans may also be used to refinance certain existing debts.

Each loan application will be reviewed based on the extent of the losses suffered, the available security, and the applicant’s ability to repay the loan. Farmers have until June 2, 2025, to apply for the emergency loan assistance.

This financial support is critical for farmers who are facing severe challenges due to the drought. Farmers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office for more information on how to apply and take advantage of this assistance program.

By providing these emergency loans, the USDA aims to support farmers and help them recover from the impacts of this difficult growing season.
