Ohio State University (OSU) Extension is organizing a Feeding Stored Forages Field Day to help farmers learn effective ways to feed cattle using stored forage. The event will take place on August 8, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Faith Haven Event Center in Malta, Ohio.
This educational program is designed to show how stored forages can be used as a primary feed source for beef cows, calves, and feedlot cattle. When managed properly, stored forages can be a cost-effective and practical feeding option, especially when pasture availability is limited.
During the field day, participants will visit two farms that rely mainly on stored forages for feeding their cattle. These visits will allow farmers to see real-life examples and gain better understanding of feeding practices and management strategies. Observing these systems will help participants learn how to apply similar methods on their own farms.
The program will feature expert speakers from Ohio State University Extension. Dr. Haley Linder, a ruminant nutritionist from the Department of Animal Sciences, will discuss the nutritional requirements of cattle and how stored forages can meet those needs. Dr. Jason Hartschuh, a specialist in precision livestock and dairy management, will share insights on efficient feeding practices. Garth Ruff, a beef cattle field specialist, will provide practical advice on managing beef herds.
The event will also offer a valuable opportunity for farmers to interact with experts and ask questions related to cattle feeding and farm management. This interaction can help farmers improve their knowledge and make better decisions for their livestock.
A BBQ brisket lunch will be provided to all attendees, allowing participants to network and share experiences with fellow farmers and professionals.
Farmers interested in attending are required to register before the deadline of July 30. Registration can be completed online or by contacting the Morgan County Extension office.
