USDA invests $194 million in rural development initiatives

By Andi Anderson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an investment of over $194 million to strengthen rural economies through its Rural Partners Network (RPN). This funding will support 118 projects across 14 states and Puerto Rico, focusing on economic growth, infrastructure modernization, and clean energy transitions.

Launched in April 2022 by the Biden-Harris Administration, the RPN has already facilitated over $8.5 billion in investments for 36 community networks, including $1.5 billion directly from the USDA. These investments have enhanced local infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and connectivity while fostering nearly 4,000 partnerships and launching the Rural.gov website.

The latest funding round will assist RPN communities in states such as Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, and Mississippi, as well as regions like Puerto Rico. Rural areas in Minnesota, Ohio, Virginia, and Washington will also benefit. These projects aim to reduce living costs, create job opportunities, and support sustainable economic growth in historically underserved regions.

The funding targets essential initiatives, such as modernizing water and sewer systems and promoting clean energy. This support ensures rural and Tribal communities can address immediate needs while building long-term sustainability.

“Rural communities have long been the backbone of America’s economy,” said USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. “These investments reflect the administration’s commitment to ensuring rural families and businesses have the resources they need to thrive.”

With this funding, the USDA continues its mission to empower rural communities, addressing challenges like poverty and limited opportunities while fostering a brighter future for all.
