As feeder calf values reach record highs, selecting the right replacement heifers has never been more important. That’s why the upcoming final session of this year’s Virtual Ohio Beef School will focus on heifer development and genomic testing.
Session 4, scheduled for next Wednesday, is designed for farmers who are currently considering or planning to save and breed replacement heifers. The session will provide practical insights into how to choose only those heifers that align with herd goals and long-term productivity.
Participants will learn how to use genomic testing as part of the seedstock selection process. Genomic tools can reveal vital genetic traits early on, allowing producers to make more informed decisions about which heifers to retain for breeding.
In addition to selection, the session will cover proper development practices, ensuring that selected heifers grow into healthy, high-performing cows that contribute positively to the herd.
With the market demanding better-quality cattle, now is not the time to risk herd performance by retaining underdeveloped or genetically unsuitable animals. This session provides farmers with science-based strategies to avoid costly mistakes.
Registration is free, but log-in details are required. Interested participants can register by visiting: go.osu.edu/beefschool25.
