Winter Feeding Plan for Cattle

Winter Feeding Plan for Cattle

By Andi Anderson

Ohio cattle producers are facing tight hay supplies as we head into winter. This is due to a combination of factors, including dry weather and higher demand. As a result, producers should start planning their winter feeding programs now.

There are a few options available to producers who are short on hay. One option is to buy hay. However, it is important to remember that hay prices will continue to rise throughout the late fall and winter months. Before you buy any hay, have it tested to ensure that it is of good quality.

Another option is to supplement grain. Cereal grains, especially corn, can be a more cost-effective source of energy than forage. Feeding 2-3 pounds of corn per head, per day to fall calves or gestating cows can help to stretch short hay supplies.

Grazing corn residue is another option. This is by far the most economical way to utilize corn stalks as a feed source. Be sure to use rotational grazing principles to optimize the available dry matter and to redistribute nutrients more evenly across the crop field.

If you are short on hay, you may want to consider culling some of the lower performers in your herd. Cattle prices remain historically strong, so you may be able to make more money by selling these animals than by feeding them through the winter.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to making up for feed shortages. The best plan for you will depend on your individual circumstances. However, by considering the options above, you can develop a plan that will help you to get your cattle through the winter months.
