During a recent trip to a major feedlot, it became evident that the cattle industry offers a great deal of room for diversification.
The feedlot was operating at 65 to 70 percent capacity and had maintained this level for some time, offering valuable insights through both direct observation and conversations with feedlot representatives.
The feedlot was home to a broad range of cattle breeds, from black-hided cattle to Waygu-Jersey crosses, Red Angus, and Charolais crosses in various colors. While many cattle were company-owned, the feedlot also handled custom-fed cattle.
The majority of the cattle were part of traditional commercial production programs, but there was also a significant quantity enrolled in the natural program.
This experience reinforced a crucial lesson: the cattle industry offers substantial room for producers to explore different production methods. However, the most important factor is ensuring that the products being produced have a place in the market.
Despite the diversity, there appears to be flexibility in cattle production, with various breeding and feeding programs finding success.
The key takeaway from this visit is that there is ample opportunity for innovation and customization in cattle production, but market alignment should always be a priority.
Producers should ensure that what they’re raising meets market needs, whether through traditional or niche programs like natural beef production.
