Central State University Leads Soil Health Efforts in Ohio

By Andi Anderson

Central State University, a land grant institution specializing in agriculture and science education, is championing efforts to improve soil health and water quality in Ohio.

Researchers at the university are urging lawmakers to reintroduce a bill that could establish a task force dedicated to soil conservation, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem restoration.

The proposed legislation, House Bill 568, aimed to form a 15-member voting task force with two non-voting members. This team would develop strategies to enhance soil health, set goals, and implement action plans to ensure sustainable farming practices across the state.

Dr. Sakthi Kumaran, an associate professor at Central State University, advocates for better soil health initiatives. He highlights the dual objective of increasing agricultural productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability. “Our mission is to keep soils healthy and improve water quality,” said Kumaran.

Ohio’s agriculture sector covers 55% of the state's land, but intensive farming practices have degraded its soil over time. Kumaran notes that the overuse of synthetic fertilizers has harmed soil quality. He emphasizes the need for sustainable methods that not only boost productivity but also protect the environment.

“Soil is the foundation of food health,” Kumaran explained. “It serves as a natural filter for contaminants and drives nutrient cycling essential for crops.” Healthy soil ensures the production of safe, high-quality food for consumers, making its conservation vital.

Despite the bill's uncertain future, Kumaran remains committed to advocating for soil health. He believes a collective effort is necessary to address this often-overlooked issue.

While Clean Water and Clean Air Acts exist, there is no equivalent legislation for soil. Central State University aims to change that, pushing for measures that will secure Ohio’s agricultural future.
