E15 Demand Surges in Fuel Market

E15 Demand Surges in Fuel Market

By Jamie Martin

The use of E15 fuel in Iowa increased rapidly in 2025, making it a key part of the state’s fuel market. Data shows that E15 accounted for more than 27% of total gasoline sales during the year.

“This new data from the Iowa Department of Revenue shows what is possible when E15 is given fair access to the marketplace and consumers are given a choice to purchase the fuel,” said RFA President and CEO Geoff Cooper.

“E15’s market share in Iowa has gone from just a sliver of the gasoline pool several years ago to more than a quarter of the total volume today,” said Cooper.

“Iowa drivers are clearly responding to E15’s lower price at the pump, its performance in their vehicles, and its positive impact on the environment. Iowa is again setting the pace when it comes to using homegrown renewable fuels, and we encourage other states to follow their lead,” said Cooper.

Sales reached over 410 million gallons, marking a 60% increase compared to 2024. This growth reflects a strong rise in consumer interest in ethanol-blended fuels. In the previous year, E15 represented just over 17% of the gasoline market, showing how quickly demand has expanded.

A major factor behind this increase is the E15 Access Standard introduced in Iowa. This rule requires most fuel retailers to provide E15 by January 2026. Following this change, sales grew by more than 150 million gallons, showing the positive impact of improved availability.

Retail expansion also supported this growth. Nearly 293 new locations began offering E15 between 2024 and 2025, increasing availability by about 40%. However, fuel demand grew even faster, indicating strong consumer acceptance.

E15 is considered a cost-effective and efficient fuel option. Many drivers prefer it due to its lower price and reliable performance. It also plays a role in reducing environmental impact by supporting cleaner energy use.

In addition, the continued use of higher ethanol blends like E85 contributed to overall ethanol consumption. By 2025, the average ethanol content in gasoline reached 11.1%.

Iowa’s progress highlights the importance of supportive policies and market access in promoting renewable fuels. The state serves as an example for others aiming to expand the use of cleaner and sustainable energy sources.
