A special maple education workshop, Introduction to Maple Standards, will be held on April 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Arthur‑Lugibihl Community Center in Pandora, Ohio.
This program is part of a statewide effort to help maple syrup producers learn proper grading standards and improve syrup quality across Ohio.
The event is located at 301 North Jefferson Street and is open to both new and experienced maple producers who want to strengthen their knowledge and skills.
This workshop is the first of five educational classes offered by the Ohio Maple Producers Association through a grant from the North American Maple Syrup Council. Each session will be held in a different district of Ohio to give maple producers in multiple regions the opportunity to learn about consistent syrup grading practices.
The course will be taught by Jake Nicholson, Ohio State Maple Specialist, who brings valuable experience and practical knowledge to the program.
Participants in the workshop will take part in hands‑on activities that demonstrate how to measure syrup color, clarity, and density. These are the key qualities that determine whether syrup qualifies as Grade A.
Producers will also have the opportunity to taste and compare the flavors of high‑quality syrup and syrups with off‑flavors. This comparison helps producers better understand how processing methods, cleanliness, and timing can affect the final product.
With a $20 registration fee, each participant will receive a Color Grading Kit and a Hydrometer to take home. These tools are important for monitoring syrup quality and ensuring accurate grading.
The workshop is an excellent learning opportunity for beginners, and it also serves as a helpful refresher for those who have years of experience in maple production.
This program supports Ohio’s maple industry by encouraging producers to meet consistent standards, improve product quality, and strengthen consumer trust. Anyone interested in attending can download the registration form and complete the sign‑up process as instructed.
