During the week ending April 27, 2025, Ohio farmers reported favorable soil moisture and steady crop progress across the state. Field conditions allowed for 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork, helping advance spring planting.
Topsoil moisture was rated 0% very short, 4% short, 79% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture showed similar results with 0% very short, 13% short, 74% adequate, and 13% surplus, providing a strong foundation for planting activities.
Corn planting reached 8% complete, improving from 2% last week, though slightly behind the five-year average of 13%.
Soybean planting also advanced to 10% complete, ahead of last week’s 0% and close to the five-year average of 6%.
Oats planting reached 51% complete, up from 37% last week, though still behind last year’s pace of 60%. Meanwhile, 12% of oat fields had emerged, catching up quickly despite cooler temperatures.
Winter wheat continued to develop well, with 55% of the crop jointing, compared to 31% last week. The winter wheat condition ratings remained strong, with 52% rated good and 9% rated excellent, reflecting healthy crop development across Ohio.
Temperature data showed a range from 57°F to 64°F across regions, with rainfall totals generally moderate. Some areas experienced heavier rain, but it did not significantly delay progress.
With good soil moisture and improved field conditions, Ohio farmers are set up well for continued planting and healthy crop growth as they move into May.
