The Ohio Farm Bureau is taking an active role in improving grain bin safety across rural communities by sponsoring essential rescue equipment and specialized training for the Jefferson Township Bellville Fire Department.
This support comes in response to a recent grain bin rescue in the Bellville area, emphasizing the importance of preparedness during life‑threatening emergencies.
The sponsorship includes a grain rescue tube, an auger and hands‑on training designed to help first responders act quickly and safely during grain entrapment incidents.
This effort is supported through Nationwide’s Grain Bin Safety program in partnership with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety. The initiative aligns with Grain Bin Safety Week, observed from February 15–21.
Established in 2014, Grain Bin Safety Week focuses on increasing awareness of grain‑related hazards and expanding access to lifesaving tools and training for rural fire departments across the country.
Michael Bailey, senior vice president of operations and partnerships at Ohio Farm Bureau, emphasized the importance of preparation. He stated, “A recent event in Bellville is a powerful reminder of how critical preparation and proper equipment are when seconds matter. Grain Bin Safety Week is an opportunity to not only talk about prevention, but also to encourage communities to take action by nominating their local fire departments for this program.”
Ohio Farm Bureau encourages farmers, agribusinesses, and community members to participate in Nationwide’s Nominate Your Fire Department Contest through April 30.
Departments selected through this contest receive grain rescue equipment and practical training to enhance their ability to respond to emergencies.
Since its creation, the program has provided more than 450 rescue tubes and training sessions nationwide, contributing to 15 documented lives saved.
Farmers are also reminded of basic grain safety practices. These include avoiding entry into grain bins while grain is flowing, always using a spotter, and locking out equipment to prevent accidental startup. Awareness and preparation remain essential in preventing dangerous situations.
Through continued partnerships and proactive safety programs, Ohio Farm Bureau remains committed to supporting emergency response teams and promoting safer farming environments across the state’s agricultural communities.
