Ohio State Marion is inviting the community to attend a free public event as part of its Buckeye Talks on Tap lecture series. The session will take place on Tuesday, March 3, at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen inside Passenger and Rail Co. in downtown Marion.
The program will begin at 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. The featured lecture is titled “Agriculture Trade & Policy: The Outlook for Midwest Grain Markets” and will be presented by Dr. Ian Sheldon, an Ohio State Professor and Andersons Chair of Agricultural Marketing, Trade and Policy.
During the event, Dr. Sheldon will discuss how U.S. implementation of broad tariffs has influenced the grain and oilseed industries across the Midwest.
His presentation will highlight how China’s retaliation has significantly affected American farm exports, especially soybean sales, while farmers continue to experience higher input costs. He will also explore future market opportunities beyond China, focusing on how producers can adapt to changing global demand.
Dr. Sheldon will address the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with Mexico and Canada, especially with the upcoming review of the US‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement.
Dr. Sheldon’s research covers a wide range of international trade issues. His work includes studying connections between trade and environmental policies, exchange rate impacts on global trade, ethanol policy effects, and China’s currency strategies.
He is currently examining carbon tariffs and the influence of intellectual property rights on U.S. seed exports. Over his career, Dr. Sheldon has served as Chair of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, worked as Featured Articles Editor for a leading agricultural economics journal, and was named a Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association in 2019.
Buckeye Talks on Tap is designed to bring community members and scholars together in friendly, informal settings like cafés and restaurants.
These events promote open discussion on topics that matter to local residents. Attendees can purchase dinner or drinks during the program and will be eligible for a door prize drawing sponsored by Anchor and Away Travel.
Ohio State Marion welcomes the community to take part in this conversation and support open learning, civil dialogue, and shared understanding of important agricultural issues.
