The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is currently accepting nominations for county committee members, and producers have an opportunity to shape agricultural policies in their local communities. These committees play a crucial role in administering federal farm programs at the county level. To facilitate the nomination and election processes, the FSA has introduced a user-friendly geographic information system (GIS) tool, making it easier for producers to participate.
Nomination forms for the 2023 election must be postmarked or received by the local FSA office before August 1, 2023. The FSA County committees, comprising three to eleven members, serve three-year terms and contribute to vital aspects such as disaster programs, conservation efforts, commodity and price support programs, and county office employment.
Elections will take place in Local Administrative Areas (LAAs) within single or multi-county jurisdictions, including those with a focus on urban or suburban agriculture. Producers can conveniently locate their respective LAA using the newly introduced GIS locator tool.
Producers who participate or cooperate in USDA programs and reside in the LAA up for election this year are eligible for candidacy. Self-nominations and nominations from qualifying organizations are encouraged. USDA emphasizes the importance of diverse representation, urging minority producers, women, and beginning farmers or ranchers to nominate, vote, and hold office.
Producers interested in participating should contact their local FSA office and complete the necessary nomination forms. The election ballots will be mailed to eligible voters from November 6, 2023. Additional information about FSA programs and services can be obtained through the local USDA Service Center, and producers can manage farm-related tasks by creating a farmers.gov account.
