The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) has ushered in a new era with the election of its 2023 Policy Development Committee. This influential group of 20 members is pivotal in shaping the state's agricultural policy.
Their main objective?
To gather, refine, and present policy recommendations which are sourced from county Farm Bureaus. These recommendations are then up for voting by the delegates at the state annual meeting in December.
In the preliminary session, the committee touched upon a myriad of topics. From CAUV and property taxes to cutting-edge discussions on artificial intelligence and the impacts of climate change on farming.
It's evident that the scope of their policy talks is wide-ranging and inclusive of both conventional and modern-day farming challenges.
What's notable about this committee is its composition. It's a balanced mix with 10 members from OFBF's board of trustees and an equal number representing county Farm Bureaus.
The leadership includes First Vice President Cy Prettyman from New Bloomington, President Bill Patterson from Chesterland, and Treasurer Chris Weaver hailing from Lyons.
Other noteworthy names from the state trustees include Matt Aultman (Greenville), Wyatt Bates (Wheelersburg), and Adele Flynn (Wellington), among others.
County representation showcases the diversity of Ohio's farming landscape with members like Sarah Hunker from Sandusky County, Kyle Sharp from Fairfield County, and Christy Wilhelm from Champaign County.
The committee's formation reflects a proactive approach by the Ohio Farm Bureau.
By bringing together experienced trustees and grassroot representatives, they're aiming for a comprehensive policy development process that addresses the current and future challenges of Ohio's agriculture sector.
