The Ohio Farm Bureau opposes Issue 2, which would authorize and regulate the cultivation, processing, sale, purchase, possession, home grow, and use of recreational marijuana by adults over the age of 21. This decision aligns with the policies created through a grassroots process for Ohio's largest farm organization.
The Farm Bureau's opposition to Issue 2 is based on concerns about the impact of recreational marijuana on the workforce, particularly in the agricultural sector.
According to the Ohio Farm Bureau, their concerns include:
- Increased Absenteeism: The Farm Bureau is worried that the use of recreational marijuana may lead to increased absenteeism among workers. This could result in labor shortages and decreased productivity in the agriculture industry.
- Decreased Productivity: They believe that the use of marijuana in the workplace may reduce productivity. The short-term effects of marijuana, such as memory issues, impaired sense of timing, decreased reaction time, and altered problem-solving capabilities, can hinder a worker's ability to perform effectively.
- Impact on Workplace Safety: The Farm Bureau is concerned about the potential negative impact of recreational marijuana on workplace safety. They argue that marijuana use has been linked to an increase in occupational accidents and injuries due to the short-term cognitive and physical impairments it can cause.
The Ohio Farm Bureau has joined the Protect Ohio Workers & Families Coalition in opposing Issue 2. Other members of the coalition include the Ohio Business Roundtable, Ohio Manufacturers' Association, Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association, Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, and Ohio Children's Hospital Association.
The Ohio Farm Bureau's stance reflects its mission to work for Ohio farmers, advance agriculture, and strengthen communities. The issue is scheduled for a vote on November 7, and the Farm Bureau's opposition is part of the broader discussion around the legalization and regulation of recreational marijuana in Ohio.
