According to the September Hogs and Pigs Report for Ohio, the state's total hog and pig inventory on September 1, 2023, stood at 2.60 million head. This figure represents a decrease of 100,000 head from the previous year. The report, released by Ben Torrance, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office, provides insights into the state's swine industry.
Breeding hog inventory in Ohio remained stable at 190,000 head, unchanged from the same period last year. However, the market hog inventory in the state saw a significant decline, with numbers down 4% compared to the previous year. The average number of pigs saved per litter during the June to August quarter in Ohio was 11.50, a slight increase from 11.40 during the same period the previous year.
Looking beyond Ohio, the United States reported an inventory of 74.3 million head of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2023. This figure showed a slight increase from the same date in 2022 and a 2% rise from June 1, 2023. In the national inventory, breeding hog numbers totaled 6.08 million head, down 1% from the previous year and the previous quarter. Market hog inventory in the United States experienced a slight increase from the previous year and a 2% growth from the last quarter, totaling 68.2 million head.
Examining the pig crop for June to August 2023, there was a slight increase to 34.2 million head compared to the previous year. During this period, sows farrowing totaled 2.95 million head, reflecting a 4% decrease from the previous year. These sows represented 48% of the breeding herd, with an average of 11.61 pigs saved per litter during the June to August period, an improvement from 11.13 in the previous year.
Looking ahead, United States hog producers are planning to have 2.93 million sows farrow during the September to November 2023 quarter, which represents a 5% decrease from the same period in the previous year and a 4% decrease from the same period two years earlier. For the December 2023 to February 2024 period, the intended farrowings stand at 2.91 million sows, indicating a 1% decrease from the same period one year earlier and a slight decline from the same period two years earlier. These intentions provide insights into the industry's expectations for the coming months.
The September Hogs and Pigs Report for Ohio reveals stability in breeding hog numbers but a notable decline in market hog numbers. Nationwide, the United States sees a slight increase in overall hog inventory, with fluctuations in farrowing intentions indicating the industry's outlook for the near future.
