Youth livestock exhibitors preparing for the Ohio State Fair must complete several important requirements before upcoming deadlines to remain eligible for competition in 2026. The Ohio State Fair Livestock Department is reminding participants to carefully review all entry, DNA, and quality assurance rules before the exhibition season begins.
Crossbred heifer exhibitors are required to submit DNA samples to the Livestock Department by June 1, 2026. All DNA envelopes must be fully completed and returned on time. Officials also require all crossbred heifers to carry a USDA RFID tag beginning with the numbers 840. Organizers explained that market beef DNA envelopes cannot be used for crossbred breeding heifers.
Livestock officials emphasized that any crossbred heifer arriving at the Ohio State Fair without completed DNA submission records will not be allowed to compete in the breeding division.
Exhibitors must also complete online entries separately through the Ohio State Fair website. Livestock exhibition entries opened on May 15 at 6 a.m. and will close June 21 at 1 p.m. The Junior Horse Show has a later entry deadline of July 1, 2026.
Youth exhibitors are also required to be active members in either 4-H or FFA and must be enrolled in the project they plan to exhibit at the fair. Fair rules state that the same animal cannot be shown in more than one project category during the same year. For example, a gilt cannot compete as both a breeding and market animal.
Quality Assurance training is another required step for livestock exhibitors. Officials encourage youth participants to complete training by June 1, 2026, or earlier if county programs require earlier deadlines. Statewide attendance lists are available through the Animal Sciences quality assurance program records.
The Ohio State Fair continues preparing for another busy livestock exhibition season while encouraging youth exhibitors to complete all required paperwork, animal identification, and training before deadlines arrive.
