Ohio State University is expanding its Improving Weather and Climate Understanding in Ohio program with a new online course. Designed for educators, environmental professionals, and students, this course aims to improve knowledge of weather, climate, and climate change across Ohio.
The self-paced online course, titled Weather, Climate, and Climate Change for Ohio’s Environmental and Natural Resources Professionals and Volunteers will run from February 18 to March 28, 2025. It includes four interactive modules, adapted from in-person workshops previously held across the state.
Expanding Access to Climate Education
The program was initially launched through in-person workshops, reaching 74 professionals and volunteers in 2024. These workshops, hosted by OSU Extension, Edge of Appalachia, and the Green Teachers Conference, provided valuable insights to educators, Master Gardener Volunteers, conservation staff, and MetroParks volunteers.
By moving online, the program will reach a larger audience, removing barriers related to travel, work schedules, and availability. According to Geddy Davis, project lead at Ohio State’s Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, the online course will help meet the growing demand for climate education.
A Course for Professionals and Volunteers
The course is funded by Ohio State Energy Partners and supported by BPCRC, OSU Extension, and the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN) program. It will provide essential climate data, resources, and expert guidance to help professionals incorporate climate discussions into agriculture, conservation, and environmental education.
While the program is expanding online, a final in-person workshop will be held at the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center.
