The US government is revamping its approach to regulating products of biotechnology. The EPA, FDA, and USDA are working together to modernize the system, addressing concerns about clarity and efficiency. This initiative aims to strengthen public confidence in the safety of biotech products while streamlining the development process.
The plan focuses on five key areas - genetically engineered plants, animals, and microorganisms, as well as human drugs and medical devices related to biotechnology. A key feature is improved information sharing between the agencies, allowing for faster and more coordinated oversight of these products.
This effort builds upon the existing Coordinated Framework for regulating biotechnology, which outlines the shared responsibilities of these agencies. Public input played a vital role in shaping the plan, with feedback received through a Request for Information.
The goal is a more predictable and efficient regulatory system that fosters innovation while ensuring the safety of bioengineered products.
