The 14th annual Cultivating a Cure event set a new fundraising record, collecting $156,485 to support cancer treatment and prevention research.
Nearly 350 attendees gathered at Hirsch Fruit Farm in Ross County to raise funds for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) and The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES).
Founded in 2011 by the Porteus family, Cultivating a Cure aims to honor those who have battled cancer while raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Since its inception, the event has raised over $1.3 million, highlighting the commitment of the agribusiness community to cancer prevention and treatment.
One of the key goals of the event is to bring together agricultural leaders to discuss challenges in the industry and support cancer research efforts. This year, Cathann A. Kress, vice president for agricultural administration and dean of CFAES, led a panel discussion on the connection between agriculture and cancer research.
“Cultivating a Cure underscores the vital link between healthy food and cancer prevention,” said Kress. “Collaborating on agricultural and health research is critical in the fight against cancer.”
The panel included experts from various departments at CFAES who shared insights on cancer prevention through interdisciplinary research. Additionally, Dr. Alex Wilson, a radiation oncologist at Adena Cancer Center, emphasized the partnership between Adena and OSUCCC – James in advancing cancer treatment.
Thanks to support from the agricultural community, Nationwide, and The Ohio State University, the event continues to make a significant impact. The next event is scheduled for August 24, 2025, at Arlington Acres in Seneca County.
