2026 Named international year of the woman farmer

By Jamie Martin

The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. This global initiative, supported by over 100 countries, aims to recognize and enhance the role of women in agriculture. Announced at a ceremony attended by notable U.S. officials, the initiative seeks to address gender disparities and increase food production efficiency worldwide.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) spearheaded this resolution, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities for women in all agricultural sectors. Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small highlighted the essential role women play from production to leadership, and the importance of dismantling barriers that hinder their progress.

This designation is not just about recognition but also about practical steps towards empowering women who produce up to 80 percent of food in some regions. The USDA plans to work with international partners to promote women's access to resources and decision-making roles, ensuring they can meet the increasing global demands for food, fuel, and fiber.

The initiative also aligns with efforts to create more resilient and equitable food systems, ensuring that women have a significant voice in the agriculture of tomorrow. The focus will be on providing comprehensive community support and fostering fair market practices that benefit women farmers globally.
