Helping Young Farmers Grow in Ohio

Helping Young Farmers Grow in Ohio

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Farm Bureau podcast recently focused on two key topics shaping Ohio’s agricultural community — support for young and beginning farmers and upcoming changes to pesticide licensing laws.

A featured discussion highlighted a unique financial program designed to assist young, beginning, and small farmers. This program offers access to sound credit and business planning support, helping farmers start or expand their operations.

By providing individualized financial plans and mentorship, the program reduces the stress of large capital investments, offering educational tools for success. Loan applications require a business plan outlining goals, strengths, and future plans. Regular financial reviews and mentorship help farmers stay on track.

The program also encourages participation in special conferences, offering networking and learning opportunities focused on financial basics, risk management, and cash flow analysis. Additionally, recognition awards motivate young farmers to lead and grow their agricultural businesses.

On the policy side, the podcast discussed the latest changes to Ohio's pesticide licensing laws included in the state budget. Traditionally, licensed applicators could supervise unlicensed workers handling restricted-use pesticides. However, recent federal regulations now require additional training for anyone handling these substances.

Ohio's plan initially suggested mandatory licensing for all handlers, raising concerns about increased burdens on farm operations. The Ohio Farm Bureau is actively working with state agencies to amend the law, ensuring farmers have the option of providing required training instead of licensing everyone involved.

Although the changes are not yet enforced, farmers are advised to stay informed and consider their options — either licensing more workers or preparing to provide certified training.

With the state budget taking effect later this year, continued advocacy aims to protect farm families from unnecessary regulations while maintaining safety and compliance in agricultural practices. The Ohio Farm Bureau remains dedicated to supporting both new farmers and the entire farming community through education and policy advocacy.
