The Ohio Senate has approved House Bill 162, known as the Agriculture Appreciation Act, which officially recognizes several federal agriculture observances in state law. These include FFA Week, 4-H Week, Agriculture Day, and Farmer’s Day. The bill received significant support from State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster), a strong advocate for the state’s agricultural community.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our state’s history and economy,” said Schaffer. “Ohio’s farmers and future farmers deserve acknowledgment for their contributions to our communities and country. This legislation provides them that recognition in state law.”
The Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, chaired by Schaffer, introduced a new designation for “Ohio Soil Health Week,” set for the second week of November. This week will commemorate the late David Brandt, a well-known advocate for soil health and sustainable farming. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of healthy soil in agriculture and its role in sustainability.
In addition, the committee approved an amendment allowing Ohio counties to employ multiple deputy apiarists (beekeepers). This change will enhance the enforcement and management of laws in the beekeeping industry, supporting agricultural practices across the state.
House Bill 162 now returns to the Ohio House of Representatives for a concurrence vote.
