Canola Farmers Gain Support from LDC PepsiCo

Canola Farmers Gain Support from LDC PepsiCo

By Jamie Martin

PepsiCo and Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) have joined together to support regenerative agriculture in Saskatchewan, a key region for canola production. Could this initiative trickle the 30 states that grow canola in the US Northern Planes?

The program encourages farmers to use regenerative methods that help protect soil health, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and preserve ecosystems. Farmers receive training through the Canadian Prairies Trusted Advisor Partnership (TAP), which offers expert advice and practical tools for implementation.

During 2025, the program worked with 16 farmers covering 25,000 acres. These farms produced about 26,000 tons of canola using improved farming practices. In 2026, the program plans to expand its reach to 45,000 acres.

To track results, the program uses the Cool Farm Tool. This system measures environmental indicators such as emissions and biodiversity. It allows farmers to better understand the impact of their practices and adjust strategies if needed.

"With climate challenges affecting crops and farmer livelihoods, the long-term resilience of food and agricultural supply chains requires a transition to more sustainable practices at farm level. Our program with PepsiCo reflects our shared focus on supporting regenerative agriculture practices through this collaboration, and our belief that joint investment and actions are essential to scale and accelerate the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices," said Paul Hrycyk, Regenerative Agriculture Project Manager at LDC.

"Together, we aim to contribute to more resilient farming systems that help to conserve ecosystems and natural resources, while fostering climate resilience and prosperity for farming communities," said Hrycyk.

"PepsiCo is rooted in agriculture, and farmers are central to the food systems we depend on. By working closely with farmers to understand what works best for their operations, we can help promote the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices that can support soil health and strengthen resilience on the farm," said Margaret Henry, VP, Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture at PepsiCo.

“This approach is intended to support productivity and stability for growers while helping sustain the natural resources the industry relies on. When farmers thrive, we all thrive," said Henry.
