Transporting and receiving cattle, especially newly weaned calves, can be highly stressful. However, proper receiving management can reduce stress and improve health outcomes.
Transportation and Handling:
To minimize stress, use low-stress handling techniques during loading and unloading. Properly aligned trailers and well-maintained facilities prevent injury and ensure cattle are safely transported to their destination.
Water:
Water is critical for cattle recovery. Provide ample clean water in easily accessible locations. Waterers placed around the pen's perimeter or centrally can both promote drinking.
Feed:
When cattle arrive at a dry lot, long-stem hay is recommended. It supports rumen function, reducing risks of acidosis. Gradually introducing new feed helps prevent digestive upset, aiming for a steady increase in feed intake to 2-2.5% of body weight within 21 days.
Health Observation:
Regularly monitor cattle for signs of illness, such as low energy or abnormal manure consistency. Depression and fecal scoring systems can identify calves needing attention and prompt treatment to avoid further health issues.
