Nationwide Launches New Weather Alert Service for Farmers

Extreme weather can create major challenges for farmers, and preparing for storms in advance is becoming more important every year.

To support agricultural operations during severe conditions, Nationwide has introduced a new weather alert program designed specifically for farm policyholders. This service sends timely text message alerts when hail or high winds are expected, giving farmers the opportunity to take action and reduce potential damage.

The alert system works by notifying farmers when storms in their area are predicted to include sustained winds over 50 miles per hour, wind gusts above 58 miles per hour, or hail larger than one inch in diameter.

Along with the alerts, farmers also receive helpful tips to protect equipment, buildings, and livestock. The program allows each farm customer to register up to five different location addresses, ensuring coverage for multiple fields, buildings, and properties.

Weather-related damage has become more costly and more frequent in recent years. Nationwide’s claims data shows that wind and hail cause about 35% of all farm-related damage each year. Repair costs for hail-damaged vehicles have increased significantly, and more farm vehicles are being declared total losses after severe storms. 

Some of the states reporting the highest rates of wind-related farm damage include Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas, and Nebraska.

Nick Andersen, vice president of Agribusiness Claims for Nationwide, explained that structures like grain bins, barns, and equipment sheds are highly vulnerable during storms.

He noted that the new weather alert program can help farmers prepare before storms arrive, potentially preventing injury, livestock loss, and structural damage.

Farmers using the service may take steps such as moving machinery into sheltered areas, securing loose items, and bringing animals into protected spaces. In addition to preparing before storms, Nationwide encourages long-term planning such as upgrading roofing materials, inspecting buildings regularly, reviewing insurance coverage, and keeping photos and records of equipment.

By offering timely alerts and practical guidance, Nationwide aims to help farmers stay resilient, protect their livelihoods, and reduce the impact of severe weather events.
