New energy guide for Ohio farmers

New energy guide for Ohio farmers

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Farm Bureau has introduced its latest resource, the Energy and Utility Issues Resource Guide, aimed at helping farmland owners navigate the complexities surrounding energy development.

This members-only guide offers essential insights into leases, easements, on-site energy generation, and legal considerations related to energy projects on privately owned farmland in Ohio.

With millions of acres of farmland in Ohio, the guide addresses the critical stakes involved in locating infrastructure for utilities such as pipelines, wind, solar, and telecommunications.

As more farmland becomes potential sites for energy infrastructure or on-farm energy generation equipment, farmland owners need to be informed about the opportunities and risks associated with energy development.

The guide covers a wide range of topics that affect farm families, including key issues related to public utilities, eminent domain, right of access, and compensation for damages.

Additionally, the guide explains legal agreements such as leases and easements for projects related to oil and gas, utility-scale wind, solar, and telecommunication developments.

Farmers will also find valuable information on managing energy costs and exploring income opportunities through energy choice programs, on-site electric generation, and the adoption of electric vehicle technologies. Other topics covered include carbon credit opportunities, geothermal technology, and biomass energy development.

The final section of the guide provides detailed information on government entities overseeing energy projects, offering tips on how to engage with these entities effectively.

The Ohio Farm Bureau encourages members to stay informed and take advantage of local educational programs available through county Farm Bureaus.

Farm Bureau members can download the Energy and Utility Issues Resource Guide by visiting the Ohio Farm Bureau’s website or contacting their county Farm Bureau office.

The guide is designed to ensure that Ohio's farmland owners are well-prepared to navigate the increasingly complex energy landscape while protecting their land and maximizing its value.

Ohio Farm Bureau continues its mission of advancing agriculture and supporting Ohio’s farm communities by providing valuable resources such as this guide to its members.
