In 2024, Northern Programs transformed its operations, focusing on sustainable agriculture and community support in Eastern Ohio. The year marked significant growth, with new projects, workshops, and food assistance programs.
Relocation and Team Expansion
In January, the office moved to New Philadelphia within the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District’s main office. Two AmeriCorps members, Phillip Kimbrough and Allyson Sprockett, joined the team, enhancing its capacity to serve the region.
Donation Station Expansion
The Donation Station, a collaborative initiative, expanded from the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market to include the Uhrichsville Farmers Market and Peoli Produce Auction. These efforts distributed nearly two tons of fresh produce to food pantries, including the Twin City Christian Service Center and the New Philadelphia Salvation Army. Rural Action aims to secure additional funding in 2025 to meet the rising demand for food assistance.
Educational Workshops
Northern Programs hosted Whole Farm workshops, educating attendees on topics like forest farming, mushroom inoculation, and livestock husbandry. Events like the Sustainable Living Faire and Homestead Rendezvous highlighted the team’s commitment to sustainability. On-farm workshops provided hands-on learning experiences, connecting the public with local farming practices.
Support for Farmers
The Whole Farm Program provided one-on-one technical assistance to farmers, conducting site visits and offering management plans tailored to landowner goals. Collaboration with the Forestry Program ensured comprehensive support for land management.
Looking ahead to 2025, Northern Programs plans to expand its impact through continued food assistance, workshops, and farmer support, fostering sustainable agriculture and community resilience across Eastern Ohio.
