OEFFA Honors Outstanding Contributions to Sustainable Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) recently bestowed its prestigious Stewardship, Service, and Beginning Farmer awards upon deserving recipients, highlighting their exceptional contributions to sustainable agriculture. These honors were announced during OEFFA's 45th annual conference held in Newark from Feb. 15-17.

2024 Stewardship Award

Brandt Family Farm, located in Fairfield County, received the Stewardship Award in recognition of its remarkable commitment to sustainable agriculture practices spanning three generations. David Brandt, a true pioneer in the field, championed innovative techniques such as no-till farming and cover crops, serving as a global leader in soil conservation and regenerative farming. Despite facing adversity, the Brandt family's dedication to sustainability has left an indelible mark on the agricultural landscape.

2024 Service Award

Tom Redfern, hailing from Athens County, was honored with the Service Award for his unwavering dedication to promoting sustainable agriculture and community development. With a diverse background in agroforestry and community organizing, Redfern has played a pivotal role in initiatives such as the Rural Action sustainable agriculture program and the creation of the Chesterhill Produce Auction. His tireless efforts have had a profound impact on fostering a vibrant agricultural community in Ohio's Appalachian region.

2024 Beginning Farmer Award

Kim Bayer, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was recognized with the Beginning Farmer Award for her remarkable journey from library science to sustainable farming. Despite unconventional beginnings, Bayer's passion for community organizing and food system change led her to establish Slow Farm in 2016. Through innovative practices such as organic vegetable and fruit production, as well as habitat restoration, Bayer has transformed her farm into a model of sustainability and biodiversity.

These award recipients exemplify the spirit of innovation and dedication that lies at the heart of sustainable agriculture. Their pioneering efforts serve as an inspiration to farmers and advocates alike, driving positive change in our food systems and communities.
